STUDENT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

This acceptable use policy is based on School District #36 Information and Communication Technology Access and Use Agreement Policy 5780.

Information and Communication Technology is defined as all electronic devices and information provided by them.
These include: (but are not limited to)
· computers
· printers
· cameras
· servers
· projectors
· networks
· internet
· FirstClass™ and other software

The use of information and communication technology is to support educational programs and to communicate with students, teachers and the larger community.



Responsibilities of Students

Students agree to follow all school rules when using information and communication technology whether they access it at home, at school, or in a public place. They will use FirstClass™ for educational purposes regardless of where they access it.

Students should receive instruction and guidance in the ethical use of technology so that:
§ they are safe
§ they behave ethically in all environments
§ everything they do relates to their schoolwork
§ they use only acceptable language in school
§ they do not pretend to be someone else
§ they respect the privacy of others
§ they use First Class™ tools for intended educational purposes only.

Students cannot use technology to:
§ Bully, threaten or harass anyone
§ Do anything illegal
§ Activities such as spamming (sending unwanted documents to many people), chain letters or downloading personal music
or video files are considered misuse of technology.

If a student witnesses another individual misusing technology, they should report this to a staff member.

Students are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network use. These include (but are not limited to) the following:
· Do not use the network for any illegal activity (e.g., violating copyright or other contracts, gaining illegal access or entry into
other computers).
· Do not use the network for financial or commercial gain.
· Do not interfere with the proper operation of Surrey School District systems and networks, as well as systems and networks
accessible through the Internet.
· Do not share your userid, password, personal address or phone number
· All school rules apply wherever you are accessing when using First Class.


Respecting Copyright

Plagiarism is defined as taking credit for someone else’s work. Any materials downloaded from the Internet must include information about where it is taken from. When handing in assignments, all work must be original unless quoted and cited.


Portfolios

A portfolio is like a file cabinet to store work. You should only store work that you have created for school assignments.


Consequences

Students’ online activities can be monitored to ensure acceptable use. Items monitored may include:
§ email
§ conference posts
§ documents
§ chatting
§ audio recordings
§ web pages.

If I break the rules, there will be consequences that may include but are not limited to:
· an initial warning
· suspension of account use
· removal of account
· contacting police or other agencies.
